Empowering Parents Through Knowledge: An Interview with Attorney Tatiana Méndez, Author of the “Virginia Child Custody Guide”

When parents find themselves in a custody dispute, they’re not only navigating legal paperwork and deadlines—they’re fighting for the most important thing in their lives, their child’s well-being. Attorney Tatiana Méndez, founder of Artemisa Law, has seen firsthand how overwhelming this legal journey can feel for parents. That’s precisely why she authored Virginia Child Custody Guide: Determining the Best Interest for Your Child — a practical resource designed to support families throughout the Hampton Roads region.

We sat down with Attorney Méndez to talk about her inspiration, what readers can expect from the book, and how it is helping parents feel more confident during a challenging time.

Q&A with Attorney Tatiana Méndez

Q: What motivated you to write this book?
Tatiana:
Over the years, I’ve met so many parents who have come into my office frightened — not necessarily because of the other parent, but because of the legal system. They want to do what is best for their children but feel lost in a process that is complicated and overwhelming.

During consultations, I try to share as much information as possible, but there’s only so much we can cover in an hour or two. I wanted to give parents a resource that would help them breathe a little easier — something like an extended consultation they could take home. This book is my way of giving them clarity, reassurance, and a roadmap for the journey ahead.

Q: Who is this book meant for?
Tatiana:
Anyone in the Hampton Roads area who may be involved in a child custody case, whether they’re separating, divorced, or even a third party stepping in to protect the child’s best interests. If you’re asking, “What do I need to do next?” this book was written for you.

Q: What are some of the biggest challenges families face in custody cases?
Tatiana:
The uncertainty. Parents worry about what’s required of them, whether they’ll be judged, and what the court cares about most. They also underestimate the importance of deadlines and details — one missed step can delay or even harm their case.

There are numerous people involved in the process, including judges, guardian ad litems, and court-appointed evaluators. Without guidance, parents can feel like they’re navigating a maze all alone.

Q: What are the highlights of the book — what valuable insights does it provide?

Tatiana: The book breaks down:

  • How courts decide what’s in the best interest of the child
  • What evidence and behaviors do judges pay attention to
  • How to prepare for mediation and court hearings
  • How to stay organized and meet deadlines
  • Strategies to communicate effectively during disputes
  • Roles that different professionals play in the case

It also helps parents frame their decisions around their children, which is ultimately what the court wants to see.

Q: The tone of the book feels supportive as well as informative. Why was that important to you?
Tatiana:
Because this process is incredibly emotional. Knowledge matters, but so does managing one’s emotions. I want parents to feel seen and supported — to know they’re not the first to face these challenges and we can help with much of the uncertainty they are feeling. Confidence is a powerful tool in the courtroom.

Q: What has the response been like since the book was published?
Tatiana:
I’ve heard from parents who have said the book completely changed how they approached their case. Some have told me that, before reading it, they were afraid to ask questions or feared they were doing everything wrong. Now, they feel prepared and stronger.

It makes me incredibly grateful to know that something I wrote is making a real difference in families’ lives.

Q: What do you hope parents take away after reading this guide?
Tatiana: That while the legal process may feel overwhelming, they are not powerless. With the right information and support, they can protect their children and advocate for what’s best. That peace of mind is priceless.

Child custody cases are stressful — but they don’t have to be confusing. The Virginia Child Custody Guide is a testament to Artemisa Law’s mission: empowering parents with knowledge so they can focus on what matters most: their children.
